• To learn the basic concepts and laws of physics
• To learn to describe in words how they apply to various real-world situations
• To learn to apply physics principles to solve relatively simple physics problems using algebra and trigonometry
• To gain direct experience with physics principles via laboratory experiments
• To improve reasoning ability

• The website has complete information about the course (schedule, assignments, solutions, etc.) and should be visited regularly.

• One homework set is assigned and collected nearly every week.
• The assignments and due dates are posted at the course website  (the solutions will also be posted, on the solutions page, soon after the due dates).
• Every assignment is due by 5:00 pm on its due date.
• From each assignment, a few of the questions and/or problems will be randomly selected to be graded, and so it is important to do all of them.
• The homework is worth much more than its nominal value (10% of the maximum total grade), as only rarely will a student do well in the course without carefully doing the homework.
• The first assignment is due next Wednesday (February 14).

• Unannounced quizzes are given at least once a week, near the beginning or the end of class.
• The ones given at the start of class are closed-book, based on the reading material for the lecture, roughly 2-minutes long, and therefore very easy.
• The quizzes given near the end of class are open-book, cooperative activities, roughly 10-minutes long, but what you submit must be  your own work (submissions that are copies of each other will receive  no credits).
• The latter quizzes are mostly qualitative, emphasizing conceptual understanding, and are not difficult if you have diligently studied the material covered in the previous two or three lectures.

• All exams are closed-book, but important formulas will be provided, and calculators are allowed.
• Each exam consists of multiple-choice problems (emphasizing conceptual understanding), conceptual questions, and regular (numerical) problems.

• You will have one three-hour lab session per week.
• The labs are an essential part of the course, and attendance is mandatory. If you must miss a lab, please let the lab instructor know as soon as possible.
• If you miss more than one lab without a make-up, you will fail the course.
• It is very important to show up on time because the instructor will go over important points at the beginning of the lab period.
• The labs begin the week of February 12.
• Bring to the first meeting a composition book with quadrille, or quad ruled, pages. It will be the lab notebook you will use in every lab.
• Further information will be given by the lab instructor in the first meeting.

• You may work together on homework, but what you submit must be  your own work (work copied from someone else's, or from a book, will receive  no credits).
• Late homework will  not be accepted without valid reasons.
• There will be  no make-up quizzes given.
• The lowest homework and quiz scores will be dropped.
• Make-up exams will be given only in  exceptional circumstances, based on documented valid reasons. If you must miss an exam, please contact me ahead of time as soon as possible.
• The final course grades are based on

• Final letter grades will be determined using the following  rough grading-scale (from 0 to 100):

  A, A-	≥ 86
  B+, B, B-	73 - 86
  C+, C, C-	60 - 73
  D+, D	50 - 60
  F	< 50

• To do well in the course, it is essential that you keep up with it by coming to lecture regularly and doing all the assignments diligently. There is usually a correlation between good attendance and satisfactory grades.
• Studying cooperatively in a small group is strongly recommended, but you need to participate actively in the group. It is also essential that you are able to solve homework problems/questions independently, as this will help you clarify your understanding of the material, point out areas of weakness, and help you prepare for the exams.
• Go to help sessions (time & place TBA) for help with homework or labs.
• If you have any concerns and/or questions, feel free to ask me in class, and do not hesitate to see me after class, drop by my office, or make an appointment to see me. I am here to help!
• Go through the other study tips given on the class website.

• Turn off cell phones and pagers before entering the classroom.
• Refrain from private conversations, loud eating, reading newspapers, and any other behavior that can disrupt the teaching/learning process.
