Music

Music can be a great way to make history come alive. I integrate music in virtually all of my courses as a way of providing a window into the past. After all, people weren't merely fighting and producing goods and services; they were also enjoying themselves, and many were performing in the arts for a living. Indeed, some societies have placed an enormous emphasis on entertainment and entertainers. Historians can learn much from these forms of leisure and what these forms can tell us about the role of the arts and culture in society.

When I'm not spending time with my family or doing research and writing, I'm playing music. I play guitar, piano, and sing, have made several recordings, and play with a blues band, Crown City Band.
